I just put in a new jaguar J gate shifter only to find it will not shift from drive to manual.transmission is,stuck in 4th does go into reverse and neutral but have to rev to 2000 to get it to jump into drive could this be a valve body or A Drum problem? the car was bought 3 months ago with 26 codes 'All codes are cleared except one gear box fault. I am aware of how thats being produced but can soneone help me with the shifting issues?

I just replaced the j-gate in my 02 XJ8 because it was cracked and it's performing as expected. From what I've seen on here, the rev symptom sounds like one of the problems you referenced. However, you also mention manual mode issues so I'll mention that there are 2 (at least) switches that are engaged by the round plastic piece underneath the shifter as it moves through the gates. One at the park position which alarms when the shift lever is not completely engaged in park , and another as you shift over into manual mode. An issue there would be better news.

 

checked both and are working. i have park reverse nutruel and drive . having to rev to 2000 rpm to jump into gear. once warm i can **** from any back to drive and it will go in gear . when i say drive it says drive but is really in fourth and does not start out in anything but forth will not kick down. Also i fixed jgate (adjusting) not going to manual sixde but does not work thru gears . 😃2 3 or d still equels Stuck in 4 th. i am still leaning heavy towards valve body or ADRUM. can anyone confirm be4 i pull trans.

 

Your symptoms fit the A drum failure. It's in limp home mode.
