Hi, new here, just got my XJ8, sorting out problems, can anyone help on this........
i have to wait a while, when putting my foot on the brake peddle to move the Auto shifter into position, reverse / drive. I can here a switch or something clicking, which then enables me to move the shifter into position.
can anyone tell me where the switch is, how to change or adjust it.
Shift interlock solenoid is bolted to the side of the trans shift mech. You will need to remove the shift bezel (a credit card type tool) and the 'ski slope' surround to get at the part. Now you know the names of the parts, use the search function as there's deep knowledge and plenty of posts on this subject.
I have got a solinoid, now need to fit it, looked all over the forum for fitting instructions, looked at videos. Can’t find any showing removal of shifter body/plate/housing on its own. Hopefully won’t have to remove ski slope/centre console, any pointers appreciated.
Although the stick moves into Reverse and Drive easier, no more clicking noise, well none as yet, I am still not convinced it is moving quick enough, so I am going to change the Brake Light switch on the pedal, bought a new one, will fit soon.
Great Photo's Jagger98
good job
I have to replace the radio/cassette unit
don't know where to start yet but maybe I should replace the solenoid while I am in there.
Ok, know it’s been some time since last message, here’s the new B.R.A.K.E light S.W.I.T.C.H, its got to be done, I spent 10 minutes at the side of the road waiting for the stick to go into DRIVE, not pleasant.
The new replacement on mine is a double, I think this is used on Jags with Cruise control, mine has not got that option, I noticed the four spades in the new switch, my old one only has two.
Ok Fitting the Switch, I thought a while, decided to save my back, so I took the front drivers seat out, laid somethiung to lie on, removed the 4 TORX bolts and disconnect the wiring under the seat.
Seemed easier to get the seat out the back door, did get somone to help, had to swing it out.
When you look under the dash first thing you see is the bottom of the switch, take out the plug, look and check where its routed from, mine was a bit tight - stretched. SMall torch is handy to have a look around, although difficult to see.
Undo the nut and bolt, remove while resting your head/arm on the brake pedal, a little fiddly, slide out switch, you can then see the location guide at the top.
That's it, fitting is reversal, while leaning my head on the brake pedal with some pressure slide the brake switch onto the guide properly, its all done by feel, you cant see it, well I couldn't anyway. Then put the bolt and Nut back on, CHECK which way the bolt was when you take it off, I nearly forgot, and I only did it 10 minutes before, gently let the brake pedal back, locating inside the switch.
Once it was fitted I check the shift/ Gear stick went into Reverse and Drive before I put the seat back, it worked. Put the seat back in, in all it took me about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish, gave it a test drive and so far it has not refused to go straight into Reverse/Drive. It make me wonder weather I needed to replace the S.O.L.E.N.O.I.D at all, maybe I should have started with the brake switch first, either way new they are both expensive £200/250(S.O.L.E.N.O.I.D)£100(Brake Switch - from Jaguar).
I did use a used S.O.L.E.N.O.I.D to replace my original at £10 to check if there was any difference, shown above at the beginning of this post, glad I did, otherwise I would have been kicking myself at £200 sov’s.
