The switch your releasing manually with the pen needs to be replaced. Go to
Roadfly
and search on "J gate removal".

Default stuck in p

I had the same problem. .and member helped me...so check if the brake lights come on when u press the breaks. If they dont its the brake switch. The switch is concted the j gate solenoid...that the clunk u hear when u select from P to reverse or drive.

On my 98 I had the same thing and traced it to a blown fuse in one of the heal fuse boxes.

I had the same problem with our 2001 XJ8 - I could not get the shifter out of park. 1st I thought that the brake light switch on the brake pedal might be the problem.

Then I also noticed that were a number of other things like the interior lights not coming on when I opened the driver's door and the garage door opener did not work. I also mentioned to my wife that there was something wrong with the windshield washers (since they were not working).

Check fuse# 7 (15 amp fuse) in the rear left hand fusebox - it controls "Body processor module (battery supply for solenoids, lamps and motors).

Sure enough it was that fuse that needed replacement and it fixed the problems.
