Car will not shift from Park....Help!!
Hi,
I have a 2000 XJ8 with 67k miles. First of all when i pressed the unlock switch on the key transmitter the car did not unlock. I changed the batteries and it still will not unlock or lock. I manually opened to door and when i started the car i tried to shift to drive and the car just simply will not shift from park. I called roadside assistance and they told me to unscrew the screw next to the park sign next to the shifter and once removed stick a pen down the opening and it did indeed shift but everytime i need to shift from park to drive i have to stick a pen in the shifter. Any thoughts on why this is happening. Please help.

I had the same problem with our 2001 XJ8 - I could not get the shifter out of park. 1st I thought that the brake light switch on the brake pedal might be the problem.
Then I also noticed that were a number of other things like the interior lights not coming on when I opened the driver's door and the garage door opener did not work. I also mentioned to my wife that there was something wrong with the windshield washers (since they were not working).
Check fuse# 7 (15 amp fuse) in the rear left hand fusebox - it controls "Body processor module (battery supply for solenoids, lamps and motors).
Sure enough it was that fuse that needed replacement and it fixed the problems.
