Default Shifter removal?

(2001 XJ8) Can anyone direct me to a thread or a JTIS page that discusses getting the shifter unit in and out of the console, and setting the shift cable correctly if that gets out of whack? I have the top couple of layers of trim off, but not sure how to proceed next.
(in connection with my yesterday's thread, re nonfunctioning Park/Brake interlock)

Default Addition to my shifter question....

or, do you have to take the center console off completely, and you CAN'T take the shifter out through the hole??
Looking further through JTIS, there doesn't seem to be any discussion of the transmission linkage in the XJ8 section, but there IS discussion for some of the other models. Would anyone know which of the other models the XJ8 is most like, in terms of shift linkage servicing?
