Default Key Fob not working

My key fob had very poor range so I decided to switch out the batteries. I learned that I had to reprogram the key fob, and follow the procedure for doing it (https://www.autoreservejaguar.com/ne...308-1997-2002/). But none of the buttons work now.

Would it be necessary to get a new key fob?

Really want to figure this one out without having to spend too much money. Any suggestion help. I tried disconnect and reconnecting the security module that's in the trunk and still no luck. When doing the reprogramming, I only hear 2 beeps, as opposed to 5 beeps, and they are very delayed. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Will a new module and/or key fob be necessary to fix this issue?

If it was working before replacing the batteries, it will probably just need to programmed again. It depends on how many remotes you program:
I only have one remote and the procedure for me is:
Lock all doors, hold high beam and stick key in ignition lock and turn to I (not II)
Release high beam
Flash high beam 5 times
Press any button on the remote
And that should work.
Also, maybe a stupid question, but are the batteries inserted correctly and the right ones? CR2016 x 2 instead of one CR2032.

Good luck!

Earlier remotes used two batteries whereas the later ones only used one CR2032 battery.

I put one battery in, instead of two...

The fob works now. But it has a poor range--same as before. I have to be within 3 feet for it to work.

What should I check? I have cleaned the internals of the fob--the circuit board.

You may have a problem with the remote locking antenna or its cable so do the following checks. The antenna receiving the key fob signal is in the rear windscreen. Look at the top centre of the windscreen - you should see this from outside:

From inside, you should see this:

Make sure the round plastic "head" is attached to the windscreen. This is one end of the remote antenna cable.

If this is ok, look down the space between the battery and the fuse box (in the trunk). At the right and near the bottom, you should see the other end of the remote antenna cable - a thick black cable (coaxial cable) should be connected to the box below the fuse box. The box below is the Security and Locking Control Module (SLCM). The antenna connector is a shiny knurled sleeve, screwed onto the connector on the SLCM.

My fob was slowly dying. So I replaced the 2 x 2016 batteries. Didn't work. Took it apart and cleaned with alcohol cleaner. Didn't work. Took at apart again and thoroughly cleaned with alcohol. Didn't work.Almost gave up, then came across this:

XJ8 remote key fob

He used an eraser (pencil rubber) to clean the contacts, so I thought, I have nothing to loose, gave it a try.
Worked brilliantly!!
My thanks to Stallard Engineering.

I'm having a slightly different issue than what I have read. After replacing my battery, the Fob was still not working so I proceeded to the above reporgramming directions. My 2003 XJR will not emit the "chirp" after turning on the ignition to position ! and flashing the high beams 4 (or 5) times. No chirp and no light on the J gate. I've tried doors open and closed. I do get a "chirp" when opening and looking the doors using the key. So in my case, I have not been able to test the Fob and new battery since I cannot seem to even get into programming mode.

not sure I am answering your question directly. I sent my key fob for a repair service ( on eBay) to a guy in UK as the fob had been acting up and the rubber pad is kind of melted.

the repair job DID fix everything for me.

You have to make sure the little flap in the ignition is closing properly before inserting the key. It's something to do with if it doesn't the car still thinks the key is in the ignition and doesn't shut down properly, and you cannot program it.

I did that too. The carbon on the rubber had worn. He replaced the stupid set-up with some proper micro-switches, and it's perfect now. About £12.
