Limited Slip
Hey Ladies and Gentlemen,
I just received a 1998 XJ8 from my father-in-Law. I am completely new to Jaguar cars, so I am a bit out of my depth here. The car is in great condition inside and out. I come from a pony car background (owned a few Camaros).
My question revolves around the idea of installing a limited slip differential. The 98 XJ has really good power and of the few spirited drives Ive been on, Ive noticed that if I give it any sort of power, I burn off a single back tire.
Are there any vendors out there that make limited slip kits? or is it more of complete differential rip and replace?
thanks for your insight and help,

Unfortunately, I can't help with your question but I do commiserate with you. My '05 XKR has directional stability control that I usually leave enabled. Occasionally, I have tried some "spirited" driving in controlled situations (DSC disabled). The experience would be much better with a LSD. I have watched the road tests from England (big 4wheel drifts with both rear tires smoking nicely) and can only assume they are fitted with LSD's.
Perhaps the Yaw control would not work properly with a LSD.
I hope there is someone out there with a few pointers.

Thanks Sean, I tried Quaife and they don't have a unit for the X308's. I had a similar unit in my rally car and they work great but the expense of buying and modifying and testing are ....'a young man's sport'.
Anybody else with a lead?

Hi Highlife09,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
Joejag05's inquiries with Quaife sound as though they have discontinued the drop-in for the X308, but back in 2011 XJR-99 purchased and installed an LSD from Quaife:

Some years ago they did not sell QDF5W directly, but asked me to buy one from Racing Green Cars. Racing Green Jaguar - XJ V8 1997-2003 - Upgrades . Another shop you can buy it is TLJaguar.

They are made of some kind of plastic and can fail prematurely? I know this is a totally different topic, but its one ill have to look into.
thanks for your post.
Thank you all for your posts and recommendations. I will look into the Quaife LSD's, and see if there might be some dealer in the US that might have old stock, as it seems they don't manufacture them anymore.
This might seem sacrilegious, but has anybody seen a swap for a solid axle? In my mind that would open up the debate to tons of manufacturers and options. but, I'm 100% sure I would lose ride quality. It's just an idea.
Thanks again,

Thanks again,
The Jaguar Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) is so world-famous for its combination of ride, handling, robustness and elegant packaging that thousands of the earlier inboard brake versions (1960-1987) have been installed in custom hot rods and performance cars. Even owners of Mustangs have figured out how to replace their solid axles with Jaguar-based rear ends. Going the other direction would not only be expensive, but I can't imagine you'd ever be happy with a solid axle:
