Default Is a manufacure date of 5/2002 qualify a car to be a 2003?

Have my eye on a "2003" XJ8, but I see the manufacture plate saying 5/2002

Is this a 2002 or 2003?

Thank you in advance

Last 2003 XJR I had inspected was a February 2002 manufacture date, one of the early ones off assembly line. Run the VIN on a VIN checker to be sure.

As X308`s were produced from July 1997- December 2002, how can any X308 be a 2003???

Model year can be different than production year in states. Same differences exist between here in states and across pond in Great Britain too IIRC.

New cars in the U.S. are generally introduced for sale around August or September and labeled the next year even before January 1.

I used to get magazines mailed to me that same way. I would get a magazine in May and it would say JULY issue as the date on the cover.

Everybody has to be FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!

My MY 01 (per registration) was manufactured in May 01. Check the registration or carafe to get the MY for the vehicle you are looking at.

If you are buying a foreign car like the Jag, the concept of model year is fairly meaningless. In the UK the model year is the same as the date of sale. They don't have this ridiculous business of making and selling cars 6 months before the claimed model year.

So that's a Jag made in mid-2002. Simple as that. If you want to call it a 2003, go right ahead.

In the colonies, most states register the car's MY based on manufacturers vin number; see Bob's comment supra.

Or try CARFAX.

I am reviewing paperwork on 2004 XJ8 I am purchasing from a Jaguar Dealer here. 10th digiit of VIN is 4.

Salesman provided me with Dealer Direct - Warranty Details print out.
Page 1 of 3 "Description" - XJ8 2004 MY "Dispatched" 01-Mar-2003
Page 2 of 3 "Features, Equipment" section - 2003 Model Year is last entry before next section, "Trim Details"

VIN checker has it as Year - 2004

VIN decoder here has it as 2004 Jaguar XJ 4dr Sdn XJ8

Wrong on both counts. For jags, Bob (motorcarman) has the answer.

Post up the last six digits of the VIN; G0xxxx?

The first North American spec X350's were sold as 2004MY because of the X308 being sold as 2003MY.

In the rest of the world the first X350's were 2003MY (although some technical documents say 2003.5MY), but North America got them as 2004MY, exact same cars side-by-side on the production line were both 2003MY and 2004MY depending on the market specification.

X350 MY by VIN

2003MY (2004MY ROW) – G00442
2004MY (UK/Europe) – G12878
2005MY (LWB) – G34528
2006MY – G49701
2006.25MY (Diesel) – H00332
2006.25MY (Daimler) – H01748
2006.5MY – H06679
2007MY – H11537
2008MY – H18680
2009MY – H28963 to H32732

I don't think there is any actual difference between the 2003/2003.5/2004 X350's, the first major change was 2005MY when the LWB came in.
