Metalic click engaging gear
Hi all
I've been using the XJ8 more and more again this week. When I engage drive I hear a metalic click noise from the transmission. When I posted my initial message about "acquiring" this car - especially with a restricted performance warning, many people said gearbox would be bad, its when not if it will fall to bits etc. so initially I had assumed it was something I would rag around for a bit and then use as a parts car to get my XJR finished. I got rid of the restricted performance thing by changing the battery and resetting the codes - now no check engine light or restricted performance warning. However the more I drive it the more the gearbox feels smooth - no harsh changes, pulls well, no slipping. The only issue is P to D and P to R makes this metalic click - almost like a strained click if that makes sense. When I was at our garage last weekend I had a mate look underneath it as I shifted to P-D-P-R and its definitely not coming from the gearbox but further back, probably the diff.
What is this likely to be on that basis? Is it something I can just live with for a bit or somethings going to go bang!? The speed of engagement between P-D and P-R is a little slow but not a huge amount different from my bullet proof and time-served XJ6.
Thanks
