My Ipod Dash Install
Hi guys, thought I’d share a few pics. of my iPod install I’ve just completed into the dash of my XJ8. Im well pleased.
Bought a spare set of centre vents off ebay and went to work cutting them down to fit, I guess years of making plastic Airfix models as a kid all came rushing back
. The ipod sits into a cut down dock so it wakes up when the ignition is turned on, go's back to sleep when I shut off, courtesy of some jailbreak apps. Plays through the cd line in by the usual method of tapping into an ainet extension cable, so all can be reversed back to original spec if required.
Hope you like
Cheers
Pete

Superb !!!
Definitely the best & cleanest iPod integration on an XJ8 I've ever seen.
Did you use the rear console vents?
Is it a fixed installation or can the iPod be removed?
Any pictures of the "construction" process?

Thanks guys your comments are much appreciated,

Thanks Dave, Ive used part of the case that a new iPod comes in, the part the ipod clips into, I modified it with a slot one end, and fixed the internals of a cheap docking station to it, this gives me a jack output as well as the ipod cable input at right angles, so the plugs enter from the back. The unit can be unclipped from its holder but you really have to remove the trim first. So I guess its semi-fixed.
Ive attached the only pics I have of the construction, dosent show a great lot of detail but you can see the dock plug poking out of the mount, and the cutting down of the original vanes to fit the cut and shut vent opening.

Not just an amazing job of the installation, but the technological side is fantastic too. I'm RARELY a fan of butchering the dash of a car, but you really accomplished a factory look, which is Very rare.
I too am a phone hacker, so I appreciate the time spent getting the device to compliment the interior too. Love the clock...

Beautiful job, pd... what I can't find are the joints in the rectangular registers. I realize you had to cut them down in width but I can't see where they were glued back together after cutting... just beautiful! Where are they and what did you use to hide them - plastic model filler and a re-paint?
@Quad
Cheers buddy, I tried quite a few glues to bond that plastic together, ABS, super glue, two part glues, I think I tried all the modelling adhesives, nothing would hold it firm enough, I ended up using a soldering iron and welding the plastic back together using the cut offs to build up the joints over size then file and sanded it back until it looked ok to the eye, then a coat of flat black paint, sprayed from about 18" in short bursts to give it a bit of texture, giving away all my secrets now
, you can see one of the joints, right hand vent, top edge about 20mm in from the left edge, I can can see it in the 1st construction photo, but I sorted it before fitting. (I think I got a detail problem)

That is a really nice job, you clearly took the time there. I bet you could make a bit of money making and selling those on request if you wanted! I like the clock app with the leaper and the way it doesn't harm the harmony of the interior. Well Done
