Ok, so I will now display my ignorance of my 1998 xjr.
The steering rack is leaking at both boots. I cannot find a rebuild kit, and every place I call wants to know if it has the "sport" steering option.

How can I be 100% sure which rack I need?

After reading a ton of articles on the web, I thought the Jag would be be cheaper to repair than the BMW.
Apparantly.....most parts are cheaper, except the rack and pinion.
If anyone knows where I can get one ASAP in the central Florida area, please chime in. Car is driveable, but takes a ton of steering effort at low speed.

How is your fluid level? Is it whining when you turn the steering wheel?

If so, keep adding fluid until you able to source another rack.

That should relieve you of some the effort it takes to steer.

See if you can find a shop that does rack rebuilding.

I tried adding fluid, and it poured out both of the bellows.I was able to locate a 1999 XJ8 that is being parted out.
Hopefully the rack will work on my car. The owner is letting me
have the following parts for $300;


rack
complete headliner
radio and cd changer
center console with cup holder
spare tire
both headlight assemblies


I will be getting the parts this saturday.
From what I was able to find on the web, the racks should be the same.


Feel free to correct me, if I am mistaken about the rack.
