Default New to me XJ8 Trans issue

Hello all,

I just bought my first Jaguar, a 98 XJ8 with a transmission issue. After much reading it appeared to be the forward drum. I ordered the new improved drum and the needed o rings, trans oil, and filter kit. The removal was a bit involved but not so bad. The exhaust was by far the hardest part. I did end up with a damaged threads in the trans cooler port but was able to get it so the line did tighten and no leaks so far.

I used Amile universal synthetic oil to refill it and seems just fine. I should have done a video of the job but just wanted to get it done so I could drive it! I was surprised how easy things went. The only transmission I had repaired before this was a Subaru years ago.

My new car runs and shifts just right now. One happy camper!

Congratulations on your transmission repair! It's a little late but you may want to check the pressure valve as this was probably the main cause of the 'A' drum failure. Do the research and you will see why this is important. Good luck!

I was under the impression the drum was weak where the ring attaches. That is the reason for the "improved design" drum. Do tell about the valve...

The CAUSE of the drum failure is not a defective drum but pressure spikes caused by the pressure valve. The new drum is simply overkill but does nothing to cure the cause. And yes, there are many, many transmissions repaired without any maintenance on the pressure valve, personally after changing my own transmission I installed a rebuilt valve assembly for a forever repair, I may live in Nevada but I do not gamble!
