Oil change intervals

What is the recommended oil change interval with a full synthetic oil? I just had the oil changed in my '99 XJ8 yesterday (I could never seem to find the time to do it myself), and I had Mobil 1 put in. The sticker from the oil change place shows the standard 3,000 mile interval, but I am sure I can get more than 3K from Mobil 1.

We recommend 5k but can't hurt to do it sooner

Frankly I think this has more to do with driving than with mileage and calendar. I drive a lot, all highway, longer distances. My cars see anywhere from 300-1000 miles in a single day. I tend to not run too hard, my tendancy to meet local law enforcement in less than ideal circumstances has caused me to slow down. So I stretch my oil change intervals.

With more in town driving, I would do more frequent intervals.

On the vehicles I tow with, I use an even more frequent interval.

I guess I see this more as an art than a science.

Yes but what are those intervals?
Some people just need a standard to adhere to. I personally think 5k is acceptable for these cars, unless you are towing with it.

a stansard interval is probably much easier to adhere to. I will probably stay between 5 and 7K miles on mine, but again, I spend a lot of time on the highway and mine never sits for long periods either.

My XJ8 doesn't get driven all that much. I drive the Mini Cooper to work (for economy reasons), and the XJ8 is usually reserved for when we have passengers or we are going on a road trip. It has been used more than usual lately because my stepdaughter and grandson are in town for an extended visit and we really need the space with four adults and a car seat.

The last time she was here I was in the middle of my cooling system problems with the Jag and we all crammed into the Mini - not something I want to do again.
