Default Oil Pan Gasket XJ8

Just had the oil changed in my 2002 Vanden Plas and was told that the oil pan gasket is leaking. I figured something like this as I have had oil spots on my garage floor. How difficult is it to change the oil pan gasket and what do I need to torque the oil pan bolts to?

Easy access. Oil pan is secured with eighteen bolts. Torque is 11-13 Nm.

Tightening sequence is:

Jaguar 4.0 Litre V8 - Oil Pan Bolts.pdf

Fit all the bolts loosely and then torque in the above sequence.

Default 1999 - 2003 XJ (X308) Engine Oil Pan R&I

Hi
I just extracted the Engine Oil Pan Removal & Install instructions and illustrations from the JTIS21 Jaguar shop manual (created a new PDF file):

1999 XJ (X308) Engine Oil Pan R&I.pdf

It has some important information on the installation of the new gasket and the correct procedure of filling the oil in the engine after completing the oil pan gasket install.

I also uploaded the PDF file to my mediafire account (in case you have a problem with the above attachment of the PDF file):

Hi
After you reinstall the oil pan and refit a new oil filter (if you need a new oil filter), you should partial fill the new oil filter with oil.

I am sure you would not start the engine before you put oil in it.

Most times Garages put the car up on a lift to replace the oil pan gasket and put oil in the engine after lowering the lift.

If the work is done on jack stands you can lower the car and refill the oil in the engine.

If it is done on a pair of ramps, then you need to put enough oil in the engine before you start the engine and take the car off the ramps.

Bumping this. Was just quoted $350 to change the oil pan gasket. The gasket is $8 on Rock Auto so this seems really, really high

The $350 for changing the gasket does seem excessive but presumably is the total for [Gasket + Oil + Labour]?

The $8 for the gasket is surprisingly cheap. I've just checked my last invoice for one and it was £22 ($36).

no sir, just gasket, labo(u)r and topping off the oil.
I'm assuming this is the correct part
2000 JAGUAR XJ8 Oil Pan Gasket
but either way, $50 in materials tops and then $300 for labor?

Save your dough. $350 for that is nuts. I changed my own pan gasket and it's really easy. Got the gasket from Jaguar dealer - can't recall the price but it was $25 at most. I actually had bought a Lincoln LS one (Ford parts labeled) on eBay, sold as compatible, but wasn't. So need to make sure which ever aftermarket you get is indeed compatible. Ensure you follow torque specs for tightening bots and you're all set. My pan is dry as it can be ever since replaced some 10k miles ago.

Cheers
