Default P0357 code and intermittent "misfire"

Hello, I have a '99 Vanden Plas AJ27 N/A, Left hand drive.

I have a P0357 code that occurs intermittently (usually with the engine shaking/misfiring and 'restricted performance' displaying on the message center) and the workshop manual I have says that is

Ignition coil primary/secondary circuit malfunction, cyl 6

so that is the drivers side bank, second coil from the front bumper. Is that right?

I've replaced that coil from one I got off amazon. The car runs fine but, there the problem still happens occasionally, usually at first startup.

Where do I go from here?

It's the third coil from the front. Check that there isn't oil or water in that well.

Is it the third one because P0357 ends in 7?

That makes sense but, why would it contradict the workshop manual?

In any case, I've ordered another coil and will switch the 7th out and look for water/ oil. Thanks

The XK8 forum DIY sticky has a diagram and I have the link below. I'm not smart enough to just copy the diagram, so you'll have to scroll down.

I just resolved similar issues with my car. Random misfires, different plugs misfiring, runs like crap. I spent a week chasing down error codes that would change all the time. Fixed a nagging vacuum leak, new knock sensor and o2 sensor, new coils. Still ran bad...then I put fresh gas in it. After a mile it ran like a champ. It was that last tank of fresh gas that caused all my problems but I did get all the other stuff done that needed doing.

Yeah, I've used the same gas station since getting the car and this problem has been around for the last month.

While waiting for the new coil, I'll poke around the ignition circuit and see if I can find any shorts or corrosion.

Swap coils and see if the fault moves, then you'd be sure it's a bad one.

Default Problem Fixed!

I put in a new coil in the 7th cylinder and everything is good now.

Thanks everyone for the input!
