Default P1396 code

Happy Holidays to all. Just replaced transmission in my 2001 VDP with a used low milage with 6 months warranty. NEVER had this code until the day I picked it up. Mechanic stated the engine had no compression after the replacement and had to use trans fulid to unstick rings. It has NEVER not started on first turn and has always run great. Now I have this noise when trans changes gears and after clearing code, after the second or third start and go, it feels like it jumps into 2nd and the the engine lite goes off with the 1396 code. Then, it changes smoothly and runs fine. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!

The fun just keeps on coming.

I have a similar situation with my 1998 XK8 -- had the transmission rebuilt -- seems to be running well, but having problems with the cruse, sport mode, and passing gear working together. When very cold the car makes a very loud noise, but it goes away after warmup. Has a 36 month transmission warranty. The Transmission specialist said the transmission is running well but he got the P1396 code which indicates a variable timing solenoid B. Being a transmission specialist he has no idea what it meant. Can anyone provide clarification? Thanks

No compression in a 2001 Jag V8 engine would indicate that the secondary timing chain tensioners have failed & there has been piston-to-valve contact.

The P1396 code is, as you say, the variable valve timing solenoid.

A valve timing fault code, together with a loud engine noise when cold, or no compression may point towards the secondary timing chain tensioners having failed.

This can cause the valve timing to jump by 1 tooth & cause poor running, or jump by 2 teeth & cause piston-to-valve contact, or snapped chains & no compression.

I would suggest that for both of your vehicles, you remove the cam covers ASAP & check the upper timing chains & tensioners for failure. Sadly, the upper tensioners can fail in the blink of an eyelid & cause instant engine damage.

Took it back while trans was at correct temp and they filled the fluid to the correct level and everything has worked great and no fault codes. Have driven 2000 miles and all is well. Fluid level on Jags is something special compared to other makes.

Happy New Year to all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
