Rear bushing(s) hammering?
my 2003 XJ8 seems to have developed a “hammering “ type sound when I go over larger bumps, such as a speed bump. Sounds like when my front shock mounts needed replacing. Are there shock mounts in the rear as well that can wear and be the cause of this knock when I hit bumps?
When I was under my XJR for the rear shocks I found the sway bar bushings had failed as well as few other rubber parts. These will give you clunks as well.
They're easy to check and replace (much easier than anything else on the rear end, IMHO)...

Although I would bet on shock mounts, there are rubber donuts that hold the tailpipe in place; if these go you will hear a hammering. There are also zerk (grease) fittings on the output shafts from the differential that may need greasing.
Try some rubber lube or silicon spray on the the rear shock mounts: if that quiets things somewhat, you have found the culprit.

Thank you to all! I did the pushing up and down (really hard) on the rear side that’s making noise, and nothing... the shock seems to respond perfectly and there was no noise at all, so I will address the mounts, bushings and the tailpipe bushing as well.
I did that pushing up/down on the trunk-no noise at all-when we got the shocks out yesterday the bushing were shot. I got poly. bushings from Motorcars ltd. in Houston $150.00 worth the extra money. Car now rides like it is 1999. Don't forget to also order/replace the coil spring isolator,
