Where would I get a reasonably priced, decent quality rebuilt alternator for my 2003 SV8?

I took mine to an Auto Electric shop and they rebuilt it for me same day. I am sure you can find these shops in your vicinity.

I was charged under $200.00

That advice is going on the assumption that you are removing and re-installing yourself, of course.

BTW... I was advised by the rebuild shop to make sure the battery was good because a weak battery can put extra stress on the alternator and cause it to burn out prematurely

 

And sure enough, people putting in alternators are almost sure to have a weak battery by that point.

It's all he way out in Ca, but there's a place called autolectrics on white road in campbell ca that can rebuild essentially anything (eg starter from a lotus 23 kit car - starter of unknown origin) in an hour and usually for ~100 bucks or so (lotus starter was $89!)
