Default Removing the Clock

Hi folks,

In removing a slow clock, I find that there is a screw I cant get to without removing the wood panel covering the pass side air bag. Is that correct?
I dont see another way.

Is there a safe trick to removing that panel without triggering the bag to deploy?
Does the wood panel come out the same way as the other two? Might it lift up?

Anyone know of a source for a new clock? I assume used ones will die pretty quick. I also thought that once I remove it Ill take it to a local clock repair shop, if he'll work on it. Are there others?

All thoughts welcome!

The passenger airbag veneer panel comes straight out towards the seat and is 'tethered' with straps to swing UP to break the windscreen when deployed.
You just need to pry with wood or plastic wedges to dislodge it and gently set it on the top of the dash.

Leave the bag itself alone and it will not deploy.

Tap the veneer panel plastic locating pegs/tabs back in place to cover the airbag.

I have no idea about replacement.
I keep several parts cars on my property for parts so I don't have to look far.

Salvage yard or eBay?

Used clocks are pretty available on EBay, just search for "x308 dash clock" and you should find what you need.

Motorcarman, is there any trick to the passenger side veneer? I've tried to remove mine and I was prying on it very hard with a trim removal tool and it didn't budge a bit. I'm assuming something is wrong and that it shouldn't require any more effort than the ones in the center and instrument panel, right?

Mine was pretty stubborn too but that's all there is to it. Probably never been off before so clips may just really be on there.

You could DEPLOY the airbag and the veneer panel WILL COME OFF!!!!!!!! (the airbag seems to have no trouble removing the panel)

The was a recall with 'milky-wood' on some X308 sedans when I worked at the dealer and we removed ALL the wood in the entire car to send for reconditioning at Madera Concepts.
Some panels are just more stubborn than others.

My passenger veneer was very difficult to get to come off, especially using plastic trim removal tools. You have to be careful prying (but not baby it) so as not to crack the panel but it will come off if you keep working around it. I wound up using a #2 flat blade screwdriver (I taped to not mar anything) along with the trim tools (which don't have good leverage without bending) as spacers to work around. It'll pop off and scare the hell outta ya.

Here's some good pics off an eBay seller, it shows the cloth tethers which prevent the dash from killing your passenger when deployed. You can see where the clips are to pry. Be careful because your dash is sun baked after all these years and very susceptible to breakage. So be mindful with the metal clips still in the dash upon reinstall, which can break upon removal as well.

If you use a hammer in the right spot with the key on, I believe it’ll pop that pesky airbag cover right off.
