Removal of XK8 Instrument Panel Wood
I have a 2002 XK8 convertible with a major squeek that I've traced to the wood panel surrounding the tack and speedometer. When I apply pressure via my hand at the top edge of the wood panel all goes quiet. How do you remove the wood panel? I have researched this and all I find is instructions to just pry it off. This makes me very nervous. Can someone please advise how this attaches and if in fact it simply pulls off? I intend to survey the mounting and reattach in a more secure manner. Thanks Ian.

Lol, I was skeptical when I read the same instructions, but they are correct. I use a plastic kitchen spatula and just pry away. Horrible the first time you do it, but you will see that the panels are in fact very strong.

The panels are laminated onto metal backing and are stronger than they appear. That being said, if the panel bends, the laminate WILL crack. Also note that 1/4" double-sided tape is used around the edges. Sometimes the tape is still holding very well, and sometimes it has given up all together.
I have accumulated an assortment of plastic tools used to lift off interior and exterior trim. They are much better than the "wrapped screwdriver" etc. They are cheap, less than $5, and inspire much more confidence than a plastic spatula.

I brought this set of pry bars about 3 weeks ago..I don't know how I lived without them. Best $6.00 I've spent in a long time.
