Default Removing fuel tank

2003 XJR
Fuel level sender bad. Both pumps good.
Disconnected line at fuel filter and gravity drained. Then jumped pump relay to get last bit. I have disconnect tool. Going to enlist my son’s girl friend who has small hands.
Question: does the foam around the quick connects have to be pulled out before disconnecting?

Not if you can get the tool up in there - if it's the hard black neoprene foam pad you mention?

Give the girl lots of encouragement - it might be a case of her locating it nicely with a finger fit on square, then you get an extension or long bar to shove it home and pull clear, you don't want her upset covered in petrol as it does spill a bit from the lines.

Forgive my ignorance: Are you sure you need to remove the tank to replace the sender? Perhaps the sender location is different on an 03 vs my 98 XJR? But on the 98, the sender is easily replaceable from inside the trunk once the fuel level is below the opening.

I just push the release tool up HARD with some long pliers, ringed at the end.

Later cars don’t have the side access panel.

Still working on it. Wish video showing. Only ones I’ve found pull tank without disconnecting.
Do you go in by the fourth or fifth picture or another way?
With line disconnect from fuel filter can tank be pulled without disconnecting fuel supply line? It has a rubber section.

Started with a length of PVC with a channel cut on one end

Switched to this per @motorcarman

Disconnect on
Disconnect on return line

Both fuel lines into the tank are NLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(used only)

Dragging the tank back with lines connected is courting disaster.

When people post about how the lines are 'kinked' and blocked or leaking, I just laugh and move on to other posts.(no point in continuing)

Was just asking and won’t do. Appreciate if could answer how to approach with hose pliers.

Done. Now that have done once, could do again in a third of the time. Used a combination of different length flat head screwdrivers to push in disconnet. Hint: tie a string to the disconnect so you don’t lose it.
Pulling tank since fuel level sender bad. Both pumps work but going to replace proactively especially because she sat for 5 years.

I usually blow the connections with compressed air and spray penetrating oil.

I charge 4 hours labor for a normal fuel pump replacement unless someone has damaged the lines prior to my replacement.

It really isn't that difficult after the first dozen times.

Good job getting the lines out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a lot easier IF you have a lift.

I am beginning to think only folks with a lift (or a grease pit -- old school) should be allowed to own 25 YO cars!

Helpful hint: Glue foam surround that fuel lines go through to the back of tank before installing. Looks like was originally glued. You can guess how I figured this out.
