Default Replacing the fuel line

I have a question with my 1998 Jaguar XJ8. The fuel line going from the tank to the fuel filter split. I was able to get that line off, but now I am having trouble trying to get it back on. I can barely touch the end of where I have to re-attach the fuel line to. Is their any other way to get more room to put the line back on?

Which end, tank or filter? how are you trying to get at it, through the wheel well or underneath the car?

Sean, I am trying to reach where the line connects to the tank and I am trying to get to it from under the car.

I use a smear of dish soap around the tube tip and push until I hear the click all the way home.

It's difficult because of the axle in the way, but if you take your time and contort it's doable - I think whoever designed it was double jointed...

whoever designed it was an idiot! My line got broken so we had to temporarily rig rubber fuel hose and clamp to both ends of the metal line until we could find the correct replacement lines.

Sorry I am so late posting my resolution. I was able to change the line by greasing up my arm with blue grease. I was able to push the line on all the way. Then I took off the drivers side rear tire and I was able to use a very long flat head screwdriver and tigten it.

Thank you for all of your help everyone!!!

-Mike

Hi, this is not a reply, but a question. Since June 2023, I have been having multiple issues (crank slow/no start/rough idling/shutting down) with my 2001 XJ8 (154,200miles). Was told I needed cataylytic converters, but mechanic back tracked on that, then said I needed crankshaft sensor, that didn't solve the problem, then told it needed a fuel pump, which was replaced. That didn't help. When I took it back for the third time, was told they replaced a defective fuel pump (Delphi brand). When I picked it up the 4th time, it cranked after a few trys. Drove home (less than 5 miles) it barely cranks and shuts down immediately after shuddering/shaking. Repair job under warranty, Talked with mechanic who told me that he also repaired a kinked gas line and he will have it towed back to his shop to try to take the kink out again or try to repair/replace it with plastic tube. My question, what kind of material should be used? If the problem is not fixed, I am sure I will have to scrap the car. I got an estimate of $273!

Chances are pretty good your mechanic caused the kink by not removing the fuel line before moving the fuel tank to the back, a common error by uninformed people. He's just throwing parts at the car at your expense and shouldn't be allowed to touch it.

Thanks RJ237! Even without any mechanical training, I expected as much. Problem is 1) work under warranty and I'd have to pay someone else to redo his work I have purchased a new car and just want her to be in running condition so that I can sell., 2) If it's not running, I may have to sell it for scrap and was quoted $273. I have had her for 19 years and she has served me well and still looks nice and this is her first major problem since tranny replaced 3 years ago. Currently has 154,000 miles. Does $273 sound like a reasonable amount for a salvage?
