Car: 1998 Jaguar XJR

I'm currently in the process of replacing my rear shocks and cannot for the life of me get my springs compressed far enough to get my shock/spring assembly removed from the car. I've read over the couple of write ups I've seen about the process but I am still stuck. I was hoping someone on here has had a similar problem and could give me some tips on removing them. Any help would be appreciated. Any recommended spring compressors I should be using? I'm willing to buy any tools I need...

 

Look for a thread or response by me for bending the lower plate to drop the control arms low enough to let the springs FALL OUT.

I gave up a long time ago on trying to get them out using the 'Jaguar Method' when I worked at the dealer years ago.

Thanks for the tips and the link guys much appreciated. Just did my front wheel bearing, again, and will now be attempting the rear shocks, again....

 

Well used the tips you guys gave me and the shocks went in without a problem. Thank you for the help, that way is much easier than trying to use a spring compressor and struggle the whole time!!

 

The dropping method works great.

 

Since I just did mine last weekend I will add some of my procedures.

1) jack and support vehicle
2) Remove rear wheels
3) Remove rear callipers (this makes removing spring much easier)
4) Remove 4 bolts under diff that are in a square pattern
5) Pry down the plate under the diff and put a wedge in there - I used a 36mm socket, you wont need to keep prying or bending as you just need a couple inches of clearance.
6) Unbolt shock, 4 nuts on top, one bolt on bottom
7) Remove shock and spring as an assembly

Installation is reverse of removal
