Default Selecting code reader for 2002XJ8

I notice that threads about Jag codes often mention 'generic codes' and also 'Jag specific' codes. QUERY: Is there a reasonably priced code reader that can read both (or at least most) of them. Code readers are all over E-bay but I don't know enough to buy one.

I bought a $30 Ebay special after borrowing a friends which reads the P1000s as well as standard codes. It is called a TopTQK Model-210can. It doesn't tell you what the code is (must look in the book to know that) but reads and resets the codes just fine. For a basic scanner I'd recommend it.

The P1000 is telling you your system check is not complete. I do not have the codes for your year X-Type car 2005 but I have it for the 2002. Now if you go to my page I have it for your 2003 XJR http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairElectrical.htm I hope this helps.

Yeah, I know, what I was saying was this scanner reads the "Jag Specific" codes in that 1000 range (i.e. p1111 etc.), Knock on wood, my X has never had a code in it. Maybe the light is just burned out.

SARC came up with a smaller dongle: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16921 and uses his HTC EVO to monitor. The demonstration is here: http://www.vimeo.com/15553622.

It's a much smaller one than all the ones I see on EBAY. Already ordered mine...

With confidence from Gus's wonderfully helpful link, I bought an EQUUS INNOVA 3100e Scan Tool on E-bay last night for $66.00. When it arrives I'll check it out and share my experience. Gus, I am in your debt: this is the second time you have promptly responded with precisely what I needed to knowl. Thank you!

Received the code reader, read a few instructions then tried it on m Jag 02 XJ8 and my 02 Chrysler T&C mini-van. So far as I can tell, it is properly communicaating with the car computer in each case; fortunately neither car has any stored problem codes at the moment.
So thanks again to my unseen friend Gus - you seem to be my mery personal answer man!
