Shocks / Damper - Lower Rear Bushes Help Please
Hi again guys, .... I got someone to rock the rear end of the car while I was under it and found play in the rear shock / damper bush. Been wondering what this knocking noise was for ages now, but I've finally found it, so now it's just a matter of replacing this bottom bush.
I've done all the searching etc and can't find a walk through on how to change the bush. I know they have to be pressed out, but my main question is, ... Can you do this whilst still on the car? because I don't fancy removing the whole lot just to do a bottom bush.
Instructions on how to do this would be great.
Thanks in advance
Dave

Hi
I have the same problem on my car, i didn`t fix it until now but those bushes can be replace on the car. You need a handy hydraulic tool to remove and replace those bushes.
If i am right it is about position 20 or 12 from this link.

You will almost certainly not be able to remove this bush with the shock on the car - even when removed it will be a pig to get out but a shop with a large press and the right adaptors might be able to do it.
These bushes are an interferance fit , and have an internal ball joint which makes removal more difficult.
I believe many owners , budget permitting, elect to replace the whole shock once the rear end is torn down to get the old unit out.
Worth considering IMO......

I don't believe you can get the bushings out while the shocks are on the car. Most of the effort is removing the shocks to get at the bushing, then there are bushing on the top that are probably bad as well. I ordered new Bilsteins from Turner and hired an Indy to replace. Less than $400 all around and made a huge difference.
The rear most hangers for the exhaust also rattle and sound a lot like the lower shock bushing. A little silicon shut them up.

Let us know how it goes... I think I am going to replace all 4 on my wife's 99 XJ8L. I replaced her front rotors and pads and rear pads this past week end. I noticed the front upper bushes were flaking apart.
