Sometimes the engine will stall - no codes .....?
Hi I have a issue with my 98 XJ V8 sport I can drive around town all day with no issue but once I get up to 60, 70, 80 mph cruising speed and ease off the throttle, sometimes the engine will stall comes up on the dash engine stalled and I have to put the car in neutral and restart whilst rolling or completely stop and restart. Once restarted I get a plume of smoke out the back end and then she is off and running again. It has stumped me I took the car to r.n Upton jag specialist in water orton they put it on a diagnostic machine and guess what no faults. They changed the crank sensor and a few pipes at a cost ! But still no joy as I got 3 mile down the road at 60 mph it cut out again ? They are clueless as to what is going on but still have the car at the moment.
Can anyone help please?
Regards
John

Welcome to the forum!
You'll want to post this in the X308 section, as that covers your particular generation of XJ. This section covers the current XJ.
That being said, has the throttle body ever been replaced? These cars had an issue with the throttle body that would cause the exact issue that you are having. They did replace many of them under recall years ago.

I've moved your question from XJ ( X351 ) 2009 - Onwards to X308 forum. You should get advice here on the stalling issue.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Get them to hook up a fuel pressure gauge, and observe what happens when the problem occurs. If it is low pressure, I would suggest the filter first, as the pump is difficult, ie time consuming to replace.
Please report progress.

You should call the dealer, give them the VIN number, and see if the campaign on the throttle body has ever been done. The fact that it stalls only at highway speeds, and starts right back up, really sounds exactly like the common throttle body issue these cars had. I sold a lot of throttle bodies back when I sold parts at the Jag dealer.
Sounds like the common issue of a plugged part load breather on the drivers cam cover and a dirty throttle body. Cleaned both and use a small 1/16" drill bit to carefully clean the orifice in the cam cover. be carefull with the plastic breather hose too. at that age if you look at it it's gonna break If they truely know jaguars they would know this. Your description is right on the money for the issue

If you have random stalling be sure to check the two knock sensors on the top of the engine. I replaced one of mine which was covered in cracks and the car has not stalled once since! I had tried everything else; checked all the connections and the relays, everything seemed to be in order so I was very stumped, until I noticed the sensor was quite cracked from the years of heat.
