Default Spring Compressor

Hey Folks, Have had the dreaded cluck from the rearfor a month now. Pulled the left rear strut today using the AutoZone loner spring compressor all the bushings were shot so new shocks are going in, but there is no way the new stuff is going back in with the loaner spring compressor. Anyone have success with a paticular compressor or do I really need to drop the A frame to get more drop of the control arm?

Thanks!

I have explained forever how to remove the rear springs/dampers (THEY ARE NOT STRUTS) from the rear suspension but people continue to try to compress the spring and not lower the control arm.

I GIVE UP.

Remove the lower plate from under the rear suspension and then the control arms will drop down enough to remove each spring/shock as an assembly. Then a pair of basic spring compressors will fit easily around the spring

Default Sorry Bob, Thanks Rock

Hey Bob, didn't mean to get you spun up. I searched the forum for about an hour last night and just came up with all the posts on why not to do it. So I'm out to draop the A frame now.

Thanks Gents.

Hi
Here is great DIY writeup by (blackonyx.com) and probably the best photos of each step for replacing rear shock absorbers (during the reinstall it says "Support the control arm with a floor jack. Begin to compress the spring", sounds like he is using the floor jack (under the lower control arm) to compass the spring enough to get the lower shock bolt back in). See page 36 in the PDF file:

Default No sring compressor needed

So after downloading Jim's link and reading through it, the XJR is sitting pretty on new shocks and bushings. I will say that using my air gun really cut down on the time it took.

Jim, thanks again it worked out really well.
