98 XJ8, 75K miles. Runs great. New steering pump, wheel bearings, oil change and brakes in the last 4K. Suddenly, the "stability control fail" warning comes on in the speedometer display. ABS light comes on too. Not sure if there is any connection between the two. Both appear to have come on at the same time about a week ago after a normal drive. Car sat for a week, yet the lights still come on. No other problems and it runs just fine.

What causes this and is it a real issue or some software glitch? Any ideas or information appreciated.

 

they are related .. make sure your battery is good.. weak battery's can give a abs dsc light on when cranking.. you will need to check codes my guess is c1095

 

Is it possible that a wheel sensor was bumped or wire accidentially cut during the brake job?

Just a thought, as I had this problem with another vehicle. Wire had been cut.

 

It´s often a failde heab ABS unit they werent to good on the 98 think you can buy remanufactured ones . But ofcourse you will need to check it out first.
