Default Starts, but immediately dies. Over and Over

I've just started having a problem where my XJR will start and idle for about 2-7 seconds, then die. It sounds like the fuel stops. I've tried to search for this exact symptom, but nothing sounds exactly right. I may have missed the correct thread, and if so, I will be happy to have this one deleted.

Thank you for any replies. PS: No trouble codes from code reader or Idiot Lights.

I think I read somewhere there was a sensor that knew if the engine was running after start attempt and would turn off the fuel if not? Sound familiar to anyone?

A guess could be your low pressure fuel pump (there's two if your car is like mine (2000xjr). If it starts like normal, you can rev it for a fleeting few seconds, but then dies cleanly without coughing much (or at all), I'd check your fuel pump. Mine did the exact same thing when the low pressure fuel pump went bad.

Have you done anything with your car in repairs over the last several months?

It does sound similar to a dual fuel pump failure, one goes...you'll limp around w/o noticing, but if the second one dies...

Connect a pressure gauge to your fuel rail, tape it to your windshield and watch it when you start...then stop. Does the pressure stay elevated?

Ok, I swapped the wiring between pumps. Indeed, it now starts and runs. This is strange because I just replaced the pumps under a year ago. Everything seemed to go cleanly. The tank was absolutely clean, no debri, etc... The wires looked like new, connections all seemed to go well. This is a big bummer as it was not fun to change those...

Also, when I start the car with wires connect as orginal, it starts, dies, then I hear a pump running, but it sounds like it's not picking up fuel, sounds like air liquid mix. I wonder if it's disconnected somewhere inside the tank. I don't remember now what it looked like inside. Is there a hose clamp or something that could be causing this? Seems like it had two hoses into one with hose clamps.

Thank you for your input. It kinda verified what I was afraid to believe....

Y hose with hose clamps at fuel pumps. May want check fuses and swap relays. Just to be sure before tearing it open again.

Yes, I went back and checked all fuses/relays, swapped them, etc... I'm definately hearing a noise in the tank like the pump is pumping air. I think I'm going to have to go in. DOH!

There's a post in here somewhere - about cutting a hole in the metal under the parcel shelf to get to the pumps - eliminates removing the tank and takes the whole job to about two hours... I'll try to find the link.

Here it is:

Thank you for this. I have seen the link, and I was considering it, but decided I was a little concerned about having a hole there. Would it not be a concern for fumes, or gas spillage during an accident, etc? It's just a thought.

I'd just cover it with fibre board using sheet metal screws and caulk to seal it... OR, I'd consider cutting the hole's shape to fit a better sub woofer. An 8" dual voice coil might fit in there nicely - of course we'd have to cut a hole in the package shelf too, in this case.

The common answer is that when you have gone to the trouble of dropping the tank most would change both pumps. Also look for signs of loose or heat distorted electrical connects at the pump and pigtail connections.

You could bench test them. Just for grins when you figure out which is not pumping how about bumping it and see if it starts.

Periods and CAPITALS appreciated.

+1 both pumps. But you could pull either relay and see which one causes the issue.
