Default Stereo interchangability

I noticed the newer model xj8s have cd players up front. Will they fit into the stock radio hole on my 99 XJ8? I am looking at a 04 model stereo and it looks similar, but has more straight edges. I am wondering if I wouldnt have to switch out the AC controls too, which could turn into a nightmare. Let me know what people have done to swap these stereos. I would probably just do an aftermarket one if anyone made an install kit. I have seen some of the custom jobs around here and I dont think it looks as good as it should, plus my skills arent good enough to make mine look as professional as these fools. Thanks I am going to search how to pull out the radio to see how it attaches.

@Rob

I doubt it'll fit. I was sitting in an 05 XJ the other day and the centre console looked in general much bigger compared to the 98-03 car that I have

What extra functionality would you like to get from the newer stereo that you don't have now ? Just being able to change CDs from the front of the car ?

It may be easier to convert to an MP3 player and do away with the CDs altogether. Search the forum for our MP3 hack for the 98-03 cars

Not only won't they fit, but they won't communicate. The newer jag stereos use fiber optic for the audio signals passed from head to amp to nav, etc... the older use analog signals in copper.

This was my biggest fear, although the dimensions dont seem to help. I think I am going to pass on this stereo and just get a changer cartridge for the trunk. I hope the changer works. It seems much easier than installing an aftermarket unit, unless you guys know of a good finish panel with a din slot. Thanks for the quick replies.

There are several threads in here descibing the process of adding an AUX input for iPod or other mp3 players - it's not terribly difficult, especially if you can wield a soldering iron with a bit of confidence (or have a friend that can).

This one, for example: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=11943

I read that thread awhile back and it looks cool, but my wife is the one who drives it daily and she listens to the ipod all day at work. Perhaps the changer will give her time to listen to her CDs. Although, using some relays it could be cool to switch between the two inputs. When I get more time I will read the thread more intensely. Thanks again!

Spend a weekend ripping all of her CDs onto her ipod, then do the simplest of all the AUX connections, then you're all set !
