I just bought a 1997/8 XJR and the last owner informed me that the sunroof doesn't open. What I found was that when I try to use it it clicks only and doesn't move at all. The old owner though it had something to do with some plastic drive gears. Does that sound right? Or is it more likely to be the drive motor that has failed. The car came with no book or manuals so I have know idea how it can be fixed, and the so called plastic gears he was talking about I don;t know where they might be.

Try to find car sunroof installer in your area to diagnose the problem.
Diagnosis should not cost a lot of money.
The problem could be a number of things: sunroof motor, slides, etc.
Owner's manuals do not address the issue you have with the sunroof.
Sunroofs are a specialty, so it is best go to the source (actual sunroof installers) this is where the car dealers go if there are any problems with sunroofs.
