Yes, a tennis ball! I did my first oil change on my XJ8L and have a nice 1 inch cut on the top of my head from the hood/bonnet, spike/latch. I took a tennis ball and sliced it open just enough so that I could push it onto the spike to protect my head from further damage. The rest of the oil change went fine with no further injuries.
