Default Thinking of replacing the windshield

Our 99 XJ8 has a wind shield with wires in it for the defroster. The glare from the wires is horrible in sunlight and also at night from the lights of oncoming cars.

Looking at replacing the windshield without the heating option and was wondering with whom to go here in the US. Safelite Auto Glass gives me a web quote before taxes and disposal fees of $240 for a Front Windshield, Green Tinted Glass with Blue Shadeband at top.

Anybody bought one from them or recommend somebody else. What else to look for as I don't think I have the rain sensors?

I just had a local guy do mine for $150 Cash. He's a 2 man shop tha's mainly a mobile service. He showed up at my garage and an hour later it was done.

Stay away from the big chains and the prices get normal.

Good luck.

Ken

I just used Safelite to replace my 2000 XJ8 windshield with tint and rain sensor. I went online to make the appt and got a confirmed price of $188 plus tax. I picked the time and they came to my house and had it installed in less than 2 hours. Very satisfied as it was all done via email and their website.

Thanks for all the input. How does one tell if you have the rain sensor?

You should see an oblong shape below the mirror with a circle about 1 inch in diameter that is clear surrounded by black tint or paint looking from the outside middle of the windshield. Move your windshield lever up one position and spray some water in this area and wipers should come on.

I just had my windshield replaced by Safelite this past weekend. It had a crack that developed from a rock chip that spread across the entire lower half in just a day.

Anyway, they did a very good job and did the job fast but very well. They were courteous and professional and have a lifetime warranty on the work performed.

Mine was covered by insurance, so I am not sure about cost. But for service and quality I would highly recommend.

Thanks Gus. "Unfortunatly" I don't have any cracks. There are some very minor impact marks that don't help with the glair. I'm convinced it's the tiny wires used for the front defrost. Anything is better than what we currently have.

Looking at the windshield the only tinted area I have is where the mirror is mounted. So I'm pretty sure I don't have the rain sensor.

If it is not your situation I hope it can help others. As for the rain sensor I know little about them. Sorry!

Hi, I have the heated screen and don't find it causes me a problem, also I had one on my previous car and I had no problems with night vision there either. I find the heated screen to be one of the most helpful items on the car, I used mine so much with Britain's Big freeze!

As for your wipers, an easy way to tell is the wiper stalk should have Auto written on it, if not then you don't have the Auto wipers.
