Default Throttle Body Cleaning

Just did a throttle body cleaning on my vdp.

The PDF is close but a bit different for my car.

I'll report back later on performance and fuel econ.

Before the cleaning my car would barely move in gear foot off the gas.

Now foot off the gas, car goes, really goes.

Body was dirty and I cleaned the best I could with plate open and closed.

Also did a quick clean of the MAF.

Not doubting, but how does cleaning improve economy/performance?

Just wondering.

The only cleaning that matters is around the edge of the valve and its mating surfaces. That is a precision fit and crud can detract from the ECM's ability to manage the air flow making fuel mixture and especially idling control more difficult.

By cleaning the throttle body you have in essence altered the base air passing the butterfly. You really need to unhook the battery to allow it to re-adapt the base air idle control. That's the reason the idle is higher after the cleaning.

xjrguy, great tip, thanks for the input!

There is a throttle body thread in the S Type Section, I hope you don't mind if I quote this there.

I probably should add here, that this applies to all the cars AFTER the X300 w/the AJ16 engine. For those with AJ16's, this adaption has to be done with the diagnostic equipment, it won't reset by unhooking the battery. It requires either a WDS, the earlier PDU or sometimes a GenRad GDS510 will do it.

Cheers,
