Transmission Failure
2001 XJ8-VDP, Getting "transmission failure" & goes into "limp home mode" when I shift into manual shift mode/left side of j-gate shifter as I go into the step down of the rears.
No other indication of abnormal shift or any other indication of trouble.
If I shut down and restart, the "transmission failure" on console goes away, check engine light remains lighted but car/trans performs normally until go into manual shift mode again.
Running the shift lever through all the manual gear selection positions several times seemed to help but I'm concerned the Jag is going to leave me stranded in "limp mode"
When I first purchased the vehicle [2004] ... went into permanent "trans failure/limp mode ... dealership replaced transmission three times under warranty ... then on last change stated "pin in the wiring harness bad connection" about $30k worth of warranty work at Jaguars tech support desk suggestion. My first question when the problem occurred was "is there a possibility of an electrical problem from a sensor or wiring?" Three months in shop!
It's out of warranty NOW!!
Anyone else experienced similar or have thoughts on cause[s]?
Thanx,
Ray H.

First off I'd get an OBDII tool and plug the car in - pull the codes (there will be a code(s) from the CEL (check engine light).
Also some reading on the trans on these cars, yes it could be as Jaguar suggest a bent pin, but they should have corrected that by repairing the harness.
The real issue is the trans itself, and you should look into the TransGo kit before the gearbox ends up needing a rebuild. Do a search of the term TransGo within this forum to shed some light on the issue.

If the car drives fine in D then your transmission is likely totally fine. The issue could be electrical with sensors in the jgate or could be the shifter cable stretched and the 234 spots are now misaligned - that could cause throwing those messages.
As mentioned, the first step is to get an obdii code reader (they're like $20) and check what codes are thrown while the car is having the problem.
Also, these cars don't have a manual mode, 234 are just gear limiters, there's nearly never a time you really need them - you could also just leave it in D and ignore the problem.
