Maybe big is small in OK? The fill, drain plugs look like they have about a 25- 30 mm head.

Default ATF chang and refill

Ross, is there any dashboard warning messages that come if the ATF is low. I cant belive that a high tech XJ8 does not have a dipstick.

Is the refilling of ATF hit and miss, how do you know that the correct level has been refilled

There is no dipstick because it supposed to a "sealed for life" transmission which as we all know hogwash. There is a specific procedure to filling the transmission through the fill hole. You fill until the fluid starts flowing out while the fluid temperture is in specified range. You need to have scanner plugged into the OBDII port while filling the transmission. Also make sure you have the right Esso fluid designed for the ZF5HP24 transmission.
