Default transmission issue

2000 xj8. yesterday as I was driving the car jerked really bad and a transmission fault message appeared putting me in limp mode. Now when I start the car, it will go in reverse fine, but when I shift to drive it will not move at first. the rpms will increase rapidly, then the car will almost lunge forward then accelerate very slowly with the transmission fault message. It almost seems like its stuck in 4th gear. I cannot manually shift gears. It seems to do nothing. this car has been one problem after another and its only hit the 60,000 miles mark. i also recently had a failure of the abs module which I have yet to fix. The jag dealership is about 50 miles away. Any ideas? Besides going to a dealership, how can I check transmission codes?

Arrrgg! That doesn't sound good red-g. I don't have my code list with me, but one of the more technical minded guys should be able to at least give you a start with the one you provided.

DTC:
P1722

Fault Description:
Transmission stall speed failure

Monitoring Conditions:
Drive vehicle from stand still; accelerate hard

OBII
Yes

Check Engine:
2

Other:
@F [A, M]

Default Action:
When fault is detected:
– TCM adopts transmission electronic limp home mode (5th gear)
– ECM limits engine power

Possible Cause:
- Transmission oil level low
- Selector cable adjustment / installation incorrect
- Output speed sensor problem (Refer to P0721 Possible Causes)
- Transmission mechanical failure

I hope its just the OSS sensor. oil level should be fine. I tried checking for a selector cable but I can't see it or tell where it is on this car. When this happened, I wasn't driving it hard. up until this time though, the car seemed to start lacking in responsiveness for acceleration. I would think that would usually mean a torque converter or something?

There's a lot of this about!

But as far as I know, no one has come up with a definitive answer for this problem. I still haven't fixed mine, as it's not the daily driver and I've got other things to worry about just now.

Have a look at this thread and some other threads mentioned within:

got the car back from the transmission shop. They have no idea. They don't have the technology to read anything on this specific transmission or tcm. Looks like I have to take it to a dealer... Sucks if I need a new transmission because I'm upside down on the loan by quite a bit.

That transmission is, in all likelyhood, finished in the performance of its duties. Toast is good, unless it is covered in expensive transmission fluid. PM me if you want some additional options.

You didn't, by chance, buy the extended warranty with your new Upside Down Loan, did you? (Wishful thinking)

If not, I would definitely take JagtechOhio up on his offer and see what he can do to help. I'm sure he'd save you quite a bit of money.
