Default Transmission question

99 xj8 vdp. Just dropped fluid and probably just saw the blackest fluid ever. It looked like motor oil. No metal or deposits came out. Could not find a hex bit small enough to remove the pan so guess I will have to change it again a mechanic shop. My question is this. This car had 106k miles on that fluid. It shifts fine but I am having this noise thst only occurs between 35 and 50 mph. When it does it the revs fluctuate and u can feel like its trying to search or the gear. If I accelerate it stops. If I let off it stops. If I get on it hard from stop it will not do it. Only normal driving and acceleration. I'm planning on having it change again with the filter this time but wanted to know if anything else could cause this noise???? Thanks.

Sorry, I can't help with your problem, but the pan is held on with T27 torx screws.

The shifting problem could be the fluid & filter requiring changing-I'm not sure about the noise though. Are you certain it's the transmission & not the differential? Old diffs can sometimes whine, depending on whether they're transmitting power or on the overrun. Might be worth changing the diff oil as well...

Yes I'm going to have to get a mechanic to drop my pan and do the filter. The noise is like a grind and the rpm u can tell fluctuated when it did it. Only between 35 and 50 mph. We are going to check fluid again today and see
If maybe we don't have the level right

Well, in such a condition a fuild change is a huge risk to perform a following tranny repair.
The noise is coming from the torque converter and will only became worse.
Fluid condition shows the excessive wear, new fluid will broke it down. Sorry.
