Default transmission replacement questions

so in the process of making my own fuel lines to solve that issue. but i also need to change out my transmission. so in doing so, would i need the transmission reprogrammed? or will it reset itself once back together and plugged in?

The transmission is a plug n play. Replace the rear main seal and the seal underneath that 17mm Allen plug just above it.

Default plug n play

that’s good news…. the transmission i bought is a zf5hp24. anything I should do before installing? it only has 77k on it. got it for 500 bucks. so got a good deal. but since it’s out, just wondering if there should be things i should do before installing aside from a new filter. maybe new fluid? real main seal? you mean on the engine?

Definitely fluid and filter. Since out of car take out torque converter and drain. Otherwise new fluid you put in will mix with dirty in TC. Also do TransGo Pressure Regulator Valve. Lots of threads on this.

Check if new gearbox part number is correct, internals changed and i don't think early models are compatible with the later ones, not that it won't work but you won't be happy with it

Me, i would take it apart and inspect typical failure points, piston drum and bearing, it is helluva less job now than somewhere in the future, i would also check if upper valve block is intact, then as guys said transgo and new correct fluid and you will be good to go
Don't throw old box away, you can fix it in your free time and keep as spare

If your A drum failed, you’ll need to flush out your transmission oil cooler with a solvent followed by lots of compressed air.

The year/make/model is listed under his profile.

The rear main and Allen plug seal is on the backside of the engine.

A 2003 (X308 car) XJ sport (N/A engine) will have a 5HP24. You’re located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania which is North America. You’re saying you have a ZF6HP26 transmission? Do you have an aluminum bodied car or steel? Or better yet, a picture of the car.

Oh, now I understand. You bought a 6 speed transmission (unknowingly) for your 5 speed car. My bad. Yeah, to fit a 6 speed in these cars would be an awesome improvement. Excluding the driveshaft (and maybe the torque converter 🤷‍♂️), the transmission would bolt right up and clear the starter. A full system stand alone ($$$$$$) would likely be the only way to make it all work.

Default full system

not sure what you mean by a full system stand alone… and as you stated, you say it will bolt to my 4.0? i’m sure that there is more to this than my knowledge holds. this is my first and probably only jaguar i will ever own. could use a ton of input and more information.

I think your best bet is to get your money back on the gearbox you bought. They sent you a different box to the one advertised so should be a no brainier. Then get your original repaired, it is often ‘just’ the A drum that is at fault.

There are options in the UK for gearbox swaps but these cost at least £5500 for an 8 speed swap so I would think that there are US options

Best of luck.

What is done is done, put the wrong box on sale and who knows when someone will need it.
I think fixing current gearbox is a way to go, putting used one there is just buying time,
ask around, check how much is fixing this thing and how much replacement + cost of used one, it may be worth investing in repair instead
