Question Trying to decide on OBD Scanner

Thanks much to all on this site! Have owned the car 3 months and the info available here is truly staggering and impressive. I'm currently chasing a recurring P0172 and P0175; rich fuel bank one and two. This is my first issue with the car and feel I need to just buy a scanner and get it over with...

Ok, I've been scouring the threads on OBD II scanners, and still hesitate to purchase for my 02 xjr... I'm seriously considering (indecisive between) the Actron CP--9575, 80A, and their new CP9599 Bluetooth units. I called Actron just now and the representative told me that none of the units would be useful beyond retrieving P-codes. In several threads I've read that the CP9575 will show live data, abs info and so on... what gives? I realize that Y/M/M is a factor for utilizing the info in these threads, so can anyone comment on success or failures regarding an 02 xjr in regards to a specific scanner? Has anyone tried their new Actron CP9599 for iphone?

What I found to work with those P codes is a cleaning of the MAF sensor, clean and tighten all connections, clean the throttle bore, and run a bottle of Gumouts Best thru a tank to clean the injectors.

Thanks Jim, I saw the threads on the loose pin connections and went to purchase MAF cleaner and Lucas injector cleaner just now. Hope I luck out on this

I don't think you will find a scanner for under $500 that will read ABS codes or other proprietary Jaguar codes. But, a scanner is essential to maintaining these cars. I have an UltraGauge that I keep hooked up and lying in the ash tray. It does give you all sorts of good info on fuel trims, the real engine termperature, spark advance, O2 sensor activity, etc., etc. And of course you can see trouble codes and pending trouble codes and you can reset codes (P-codes). You can get them for under $100. There is also the Torque app for Android phones that hooks up to a blue tooth OBDII dongle/gadget. They are all pretty good.

I bought recently an Autel MD702 a few months ago, works on ABS, engine and transmission on my XJ8. Can monitor the engine live data, it was a good choice, I see it 300 $ on ebay.com (only for European cars, Bugatti included).

The Actron CP9575 seems to work well with my 99 XJR, and it does has live data. Things like coolant temp, throttle position, MPH, and so on. I haven't had a chance to learn all of its functions yet, but it is a pretty darn good scan tool for the price. :-)

Thanks Chad, I did see your post in the recommended scanner thread...I think I'm leaning towards the 9575. Will it show fuel trim?

Yes, it does show fuel trim. There are quite a few functions on this scan tool. And, if I'm not mistaken, it will handle ABS codes. However, as I have not had any issues with ABS or traction control messages on my XJR, I cannot confirm that it will read Jaguar ABS codes.

Auto Enginuity with the Jaguar enhancement does everything including airbags. Dealer level diagnostics. Works with a pc. It is a little difficult to set up at first. I had to call tech support.
About $540 total. (Less than the cost of one dealer visit....) My Actron unit could do the drivetrain basics, but not the Jaguar specifics.

If you are already going North of $350, I agree that getting the AutoEnginuity with Jag enhanced should be considered. I use it more regularly for diagnostics than I do my IDS which is slow and painful, but will flash modules, which AE will not!

NEW ELM327 Bluetooth OBD2 OBD 2 OBDII Scan Reader Diagnostic Auto Car Tool | eBay

Got an ELM27 for mine with the Torque app on my android phone and it works fine - reads and resets codes and give live readings etc. I don't see the point in spending loads on a 'proper' code reader as this does all I need.

"Live readings" is not the same as trend charts. Trends allow you to analyze data over operation ranges. Data logging will provide the same function, using stored data imported into excel.

I have two readers, an Actron for just reading and a SCT that will modify programming and upload full reflashes but I would never try that on the Jaguar. On a Ford I can change just about everything having to do with engine and transmission controls.

This is more practical for everyday use and it cost less than $10 shipped:

ELM327 V1 5 Mini OBD2 II Bluetooth Car Diagnostic Interface Scanner Tool New | eBay

With a bluetooth laptop or intelligent phone it will do everything you need for standard code reading/reset.

For the rice burners there are a number of free or cheap software packages with all sorts of programming capabilities. Sooner or later someone will take the Jaguar specific codes and create such for our cars.

I was mistaken. After double-checking, I can confirm that the CP9575 does NOT read ABS codes...

Does just about everything else, tho. Just bought a 9527: impressive. Coolant temp holding at 198*F. Sometime back someone sent a list of st and lt trim values: I need to hunt them down..

I am afraid you might be missing the point on LTFT and STFT. They are trim values, applied to the calculated fuel input based on measured air. So, zero would represent perfect trims. In paractice , the STFT will bounce pretty regularly from about +8 to about -8 or less, and the LTFT will zero line in a perfectly calibrated car. My XJ8 does that. On most cars, the LTFT will wander up from zero to the + or - 2 or three percent range, which is nothing to worry about. My XJR used to do that before it started misbehaving! So, what other folks have on fuel trims matters not to you. What you want is to make sure they seem to be hanging near zero, and then record them for several engine conditions, like idle, say 10 mph and then say 45 mph. Keep the records for comparison when something seems amiss, or you get a code related to fueling.
After you look at that a little bit, there are some good posts geting deeper into fuel trim...
