There is a thread in the 'General' section discussing OBDII readers. Most work but have limitations.

The data port on the XK8/R is directly above the hood/bonnet release lever. Don't know about the XJ8/R series.

I hooked up an acutron, pre can, obdii reader a couple weeks ago to adjust my throttle slack and had no problems. The port was on the deivers side of the center console, under the dash facing the floor, i would imagine yours is the same way.
Btw check your throttle slack if your scanner works. Mine was reading 85% floored and 95% really jammed into the carpet which i never push that hard when driving. Adjust it from the engine bay by cutting the zip tie and rethreading the metal throttle cable sleeve. Make sure to check both your WOT and especially your idle. My car idles at about 750 an still has 100% WOT. Also be sure to reziptie the cable!
