My 98 XJR did not come with a manual and was wondering what the recommended oil is?

 

Do a search - you can find the manual online for download.

Jaguar specified 5w - 30 conventional w/ 10k changes.

I don't drive mine often --- so for longevity I use full synthetics and OE filter.


The new blends are a good value for more frequent driving and changes

I think the Jaguar oil chart gives oil viscosity relative to climatic temperatures.

I have used Mobil-1 Synthetic Motor Oil, 5w-30 with great results on both my 1998 XJR and 2000 XK8. I have not used any other brand, so I can’t offer a comparison. I'm sticking with a product that I have used for years on all of my other vehiclas as well.

Please notify me when the artillery shelling is over.

Watch out because they may decide to use mortars since they are so close. :-)

I got the fact that I should use 5W-30. Conventional? Semi-synthetic? full synthetic? Looking at the sticker on the windshield for the last oil change it was done at a Quick Lube place with conventional 5W-30... Should I stick with that? I am planning a 3000 mile trip in February from NH to FL and back...

Road Racer - there have been lots of threads and lots of heated discussions about motor oil on this forum, that is why I am joking about the artillery and such!

I think the short answer to your question is to use whatever quality oil you want that is the proper viscosity for your car, area and driving habits. As long as you change it and the filter within the specified service intervals, you will be OK. Some say every 3K, some say you can take synthetics to 10K or more, just depends on how and how much you drive your car.

I use full synthetic and change mine every 5K or once a year because I don't put many miles on my XJR.

You will see many responses from members here and can make your own decisions.

I think these engines deserve a better oil than a standard one... at least a partial synthetic. As you pass the 100K mile, I like to use an oil with a higher hot viscosity, ie a 5w40. This has a good cold viscosity for cold starts, but gives a little more protection when the engine is hot. Lots of good 5w40's around, then it comes down to personal preference as much as anything.

 

That's it in a nutshell. There is no credible evidence to show that Jaguar got the type of oil, viscosity or change interval wrong.

There is also no evidence indicating that going for boutique oils or oil types other than traditional 'dino' type will make any difference other than lightening your wallet.

It's your car and your money, so use whatever makes YOU feel best- the car couldn't care less.

 

Don't forget the engine holds 8+ quarts of oil .. not the more typical 5 .. or even 4.

 

I use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic in my 2000 XJR, now at about 97,000 miles. It seems to work fine, and is cheap for a full synth. I usually change the oil at about 5000-7000 miles. I feel like it should last longer with the high capacity it has, but it's usually looking pretty gunky by the 5000 mile mark and really grody by the 7000 mark, so I usually change it then. I do drive it harder than average though.

 

Has anyone used the Shell Rotella 5w-30? Someone told me it is pretty good oil...
I have had bad experience with the full synthetic on a couple of old cars that I had in the past. After using the full synthetics I started to get oil leaks...

 

It is an excellent oil and pretty much mandatory these days in engines that need a high level of ZDDP for the cam and lifters. The present API SN spec oils do not have enough.

Your engine does not fit into that category however.

If you're looking for consensus here on any of the possible choices on the market, don't hold your breath. Not going to happen.

 

I have been using Mobil 1 for nearly forty years -- ten in Jag engines -- and only the 94 Cad Seville ever leaked (POS). I change at 5k miles. 5w - 30 works in my Jags and the LRs.

 

Are you talking about the Rotella or the full synthetic?

I know from experience that if a car has been on regular oil then you change it over to syn oil. The syn oil will wash out the sludge inside your motor and stop up the screen in the oil pump.
My friend did this and his oil light came on. That is what he found once the oil pan was off. This was on a lexus. But since then I have been told that can happen when you go from reg to syn oil.
I put 5w30 mobil 1 full syn in all my cars. Have used rotella in my diesel truck forever with good service.
