Default X308 Dash Illumination. On always or only at 'night'?

Following through from a post from the XF section where the dashboard lights are not illuminated.

Are the recessed instruments supposed to illuminated during the day? Is there an option?

Is there a modification? I find the speedo hard to read especially if the sun is coming from over over my shoulder.

Would a globe out cause this function/if any to stop working? Any-one gone HUD (head up display)?

Try covering the light sensor on the dash with something during the daylight to see if if makes a difference in how well you can see the instruments. This will make the car think it is night and turn on the headlights and instrument lights.

If it does then you can move on to a mod to make the instrument lights stay on all the time.

A wiring diagram would be necessary or it might be simpler to permanently cover the sensor with something to block the daylight like some unobtrusive tape or something. You would have the headlights on all the time too though.

That's the way it should be I think. Does the 'Auto' position on the headlight stalk make any difference or the position of the the dimmer switch have/supposed to have a permanent 'on' ?

Ill check again tomorrow to be sure, but Im 99% even with the lighs in the full off position, the gauges remain lit. They should too as deep in those tunnels theyd be hard to read for many

The lights are always on. There is a rheostat next to the steering wheel adjustment control on the side of the steering column which you can use to brighten and dim the dash lights. If this does nothing then it may be broken, or point to another issue.
Putting the headlight switch into Auto shouldn't make any difference

I actually read the Handbook as last resort some time ago,it said about the dimmer on our 'left' side which works as a dimmer. No mention of any was of turning the dash lights on/off though. I didn't want to force it to see it had constant on 'click'

The lack of speedo visibility has been an issue with me for years,I had just accepted that was the way it was.

There is a globe out though that may/may not affect it. The Auto function is recommended in the handbook.

See the manual again.

The rotary dimmer also has a full on override position which is reached
by going through the click stop.

Even in full off position, they stay lit but slightly dimmer. I checked thoroughly today. They never go "out", but they will dim in the full off position. Anything other than full off, theyre fully lit according to the brightness level you have set. If yours arent working this way, there is something wrong with your bulbs or controls
