Default Gearbox problem

Hi! I have an issue with my gearbox... today when hade the car on idle a couple of minuets, later when I was about to drive it was impossible to get the stick in D.. it was stuck in P. I had tried to hit the breaks a couple of times and to restart the car but the problem remains. What to do?

Assuming you have an XJ (X350) model, (the all aluminium cars), then there is a little solenoid in the gearshift module that is activated by a switch on the brake pedal. So to put the car into gear, one must first press on the brake pedal. So it seems you either have a fault with the module or the brake switch. Do your brake lights work ?

Pull the top off of the shifter and look down inside. I had the same problem and found a piece of plastic jammed in the track. I removed it and have had no problem since.

Niklas,

I have moved your thread from the forum for the X350 to the forum for the X308, which is the Jaguar factory code for 1997-2003 XJs with 8-cylinder engines. Here your questions will be visible to knowledgeable owners of similar cars.

I believe your '98 has a brake pedal/gearshift interlock system, so the first possibilities that come to mind are the neutral switch in the gear selector module or the brake switch connected to the brake pedal assembly. There have been lots of posts on this topic - you can use the Search window at the top of this page to research them, and hopefully other members who have resolved a similar issue will respond.

Cheers,

Don
