Default x308 "Subwoofer" Replacement

All
Over the next week or two I'm going to get my 6x9 errrrrr subwoofer replaced probably at Best Buy (yeah Christmas gift cards!). That being said, since you have to buy a pair of speakers does anyone want to split that purchase with me and I'll send you the other one?

Replaced the old "sub" with these:

As we only have one I have an extra one and well sell it for $40 shipped. It sounds really good when I tried it out with Crosby, Stills and Nash, London Grammar and Midlake but lacks real bass for rap.

The 6x9 speaker in these cars use a dual voice coil. (Gives bass from both left and right channels. Single voice coil speakers will only give bass from one channel.) Dual voice coil speakers are usually sold individually.

It should work as long as you match the impedance

I ended up switching out my blown sub in the rear with a dual voice coil 6" sub. When I go ahead and connect the two plugs on the sub (I figured that the wire next to the clip is the positive wire) it cancels out. But the moment I just connect one side it works. But it ever so slightly moves. Can someone help me and tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Gravedigging a few year old thread...

Anyways, it sounds like one of your coils is hooked up out of phase, on one of the connectors flip pos and neg and try again with both coils hooked up. Also maybe possible your amp is blown, though less likely.

I highly doubt it's blow. I have the premium sound so if it were blow I'm assuming that all sound would be out. So does it matter what side coil I flip? Just to be sure, you saying to connect one side normal (pos to pos neg to neg) and the other side pos to neg neg to pos

Sounds like ( pun ) one leg of the speaker is going to ground and you are getting half of the sine wave . You can test with a 9 volt battery if hooked up properly will push the cone out . From your observation you have the negative post correct as it is only sucking in the cone from the " at rest " neutral cone position .

What low frequencies do you think this 3-way speaker is able to faithfully reproduce? The mid and high frequencies that it can reproduce are already addressed by all four doors’ speakers and tweeters, including the A-pillar ones. Then, the original XJR subwoofer is a single, low frequency-only optimized cone driver that, most likely, a 3-way “all frequencies” speaker will not match. Furthermore, even with the OEM unit, I don’t believe that the designers of the XJR “Premium” ICE were expecting their 6x9 driver to truly reproduce frequencies into the lower than 100 hertz range. Then, I have some pieces of music moments, like pipe organ and such (try the very end of “Vesti la Giubba” from “Pagliacci” that can likely crack the walls if enough volume…LOL) which can explain the simple difference between a subwoofer and a…woofer. At low enough frequencies, one reproduces the sound, the other one reproduces…silence. I learned this a long time ago when I cut two big 12” holes on the metal behind the rear seat that divided the trunk and the passenger compartment on my ’77 XJ12 in order to install two 12” “free-airs”. Man, what an incredible difference this made. The really low frequencies sounded massive, so very broad like coming in from all angles, like coming from a very large and high ancient Egyptian palace. A small cone couldn’t possible emulate that experience.

This is why I have dedicated sub woofers in enclosures, in both of my Jags (XJS). Not for “boom-boom”, but rather for great low frequency music support. I would highly recommend this route to true low frequency response.

Cheers.

Correct. It can be argued that it does matter which side you flip, but for the current troubleshooting purposes it doesn't really matter. If you flip one side and it improves the symptoms, then you know that that was the issue. if that fixes it, you can try flipping the other side (so it would still be one side amp+ to coil+, amp- to coil-, other side amp+ to coil-, amp- to coil+, but you just end up switching which side is which) and listening to both setups to see which one matches better in combination with the door speakers.
