I'm getting ready to pull the engine on my 2000 XJ8. And I just finished reading the JTIS instructions (found in this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj-x308-xj8-xjr-27/xj-x308-engine-removal-jtis-instructions-71546/ ) {awesome info btw}
It appears (from reading the instructions)as if I am going to be taking the engine AND transmission out together?
Does that sound right to you all?... here’s my concern, I am planning to do this in my home garage and I have about 8 feet of vertical clearance… from my rough measurements...The engine is about 28-30” top to bottom +/- . The overall length of the engine & trans is ~ 48 +/-…. The height to the top of the engine compartment is about 36" so my question is : is that going to be enough to get the engine and trans out together?

Seems like it’s going to be very tight…
I should mention that I was planning to use a rolling gantry with a winch so that would limit me to about 7’3" max height.. I might be able to start inching the engine up and out & then move the gantry forward and as the trans starts to exit… then try and level it up & out by hand… I Also thought about removing the wheels for a little extra clearance as the suspension will likely lift up as weight is displaced from the frame….?
I’m just trying to think of everything in advance so I don’t run into too many “gotchas” and get totally stuck with an engine in mid-air and no way to get it out.
I also read the JTIS for transmission removal as well and I suppose I could drop the trans, disconnect from engine, and then pull the engine, but that seems like A LOT more work.

The 'gantry and wench' leave some uncertainly in my understanding of the clearances. You would probably be well served to have an adjustable load leveler there also (2 Ton Capacity Heavy Duty Load Leveler) but that would further reduce your clearance.
Removing wheels would certainly help.

Yep- take them out together. Use short chains to give maximum clearance, I used a floor jack to manipulate the engine until it was clear of the front crossmember and that way I didn't have to adjust the chains-
If it was me (and it WAS) I would push the car into the driveway enough to pull the engine and trans, pull the motor and then push it back in.

I've been taking some measurements in the garage and may forego the gantry if I can get a beam across the top of a couple of joists. Then I should have more than enough room to get everything up and out. I found some some bottle jacks on craigs list super cheap so I'm going to add those to the joists for extra support. will try and take pictures of the set up once I get everything in place.
I'll keep you all posted--

If the car is nose out in the garage, then nosing it out onto the driveway and working with a rented engine hoist might be the easiest. You can always push the car back into the garage once the engine is out.

As for the weight of the engine... 200kg... or as Clark Griswold would say
" That's 440 Pounds to you and me Russ"

$200 and you will want the O rings as well. If you have a tranny shop close, I would take the parts in and have them dis and re-assemble, its a bit difficult but the R&R of the A-drum is a walk in the park.
