Default XJ8 - Reverse Only

Hello-

New member here with a question. Have search thread history - but have found nothing that addresses this specific problem. Going to look at a '98 with 140,000.
I'm told it's in great shape except for the transmission. It goes in reverse only - no forward gears. Any chance this could be the TCM or a valve body problem?

Welcome to the forum, Glenn. It's likely that it needs a rebuilt transmission because the a-drum failed and may have caused additional damage. Just putting in a used transmission will not be a good idea, unless the a-drum and main pressure valve are replaced.
Have the secondary tensioners been upgraded? If you plan on doing all the work yourself you could be okay, but if you will have a shop do the work you will easily invest more than the car is worth just for the repairs.

Thanks for the prompt replies. Guess I'll have to see what I can buy the XJ for to see if this makes sense.
