XJR 98 Security Module draining battery?
The security light on the console that normally blinks when the car is locked is staying on solid red. The car cannot be locked/unlocked with the key and this issue is draining the battery.
I have re-charged the battery several times which causes the light to go out and the security system to work normally for a short while. Eventually, the issue begins again.
Before posting this topic, I have searched this forum and Google looking for the same issue and have found similiar scenarios, some of which point to the security module.
I am an old guy with an old car (98 XJR - 136,000) and cannot afford the $85 an hour our dealer charges to "troubleshoot" problems. Unfortunately, more often than not, the dealer keeps putting in new parts until a problem is resolved.
Any help/advice would sure be appreciated.

Well, from one old guy to another-
Do you have a multimeter? They were selling a not terrible one for $3.00 at Harbor Freight this weekend! Normally it is about $8.00, I think. With that and a couple of alligator test leads, we can lead you through some tests.
Now, as to the SLM being the root cause, nmaybe. There have been more reports of the key transponder activation switch- part of the key switch that senses a key being inserted, being the root cause. Have you tried jiggling the switch to see if the light starts blinking?
With the meter, we can lead you through some simple tests to measure the off state load current and begine pinpointing the actual problem.

I am out picking up the volt meter and aligator clips. Disconnected the battery last night to avoid discharging it as the light was on. Connected it this morning and light was still on. Drove the car around the neighborhood for about a mile and the light went off. Parked the car and engaged the security/lock system. The light blinked on and off as it should.
This is par for the course. Never know when this will happen and when it does, my battery drains and the car will not start.
Will have the clips and volt meter this afternoon and will advise.
Many thanks,
Don
