The other day I was driving and got on it a little so get in front of some people and heard this horrendous knocking sound. I panicked and drove super casually to a friends shop where he checked it out, and determined my supercharger coupler is bad. So I am now in the market for a replacement.
I know a lot of you guys have parts sitting around so I figured I’d see if anyone either has a spare or can point me in the direction of one.
I found a eBay seller who is selling a rebuilt about, with 10% pulley for $450 plus $250 core. This seems like a pretty solid deal, but wanted to see if anyone here had any insight or recommendations first.
You can drain the SC yourself very simply....I post an updated way on post 35 and DonB an easy way to undo the plug in post 36. You can drive right to the Chevy counter and pick up the fluid cheaply. Have your buddy do it then, should only take a few hours.
really? It's so bad. Like knocking. The video I tried to upload didn’t work. I’ll fix when I get to my computer.
It's just how they are, the spring couplers all start knocking even at low mileage and as they wear it gets louder. On the CTS-V it was so widespread the engineers had to tell people to just live with it.
If you go to fix that noise, only use a genuine Eaton spring loaded coupler. When I rebuilt my last charger, I used one of those solid couplers. Sounded like marbles rolling around in that thing. It was awful. I had tediously measured and double checked my work prior to reassembling. The only thing I didn’t mess with was the 2 main center rotor bearings which required extra special attention and I didn’t feel that inclined to do it. After I went back in it the second time, I used the genuine Eaton coupler and now it’s real quiet.

awesome thank you so much! I ordered the oil and a syringe to pull the old oil out. I will order a coupler as well.
I found a used s/c by following the link someone left above. I may buy a whole unit to use while I have my current one rebuilt. This is probably a good time to upgrade pulley right
Well, I removed the supercharger belt today and this noise is still present. It still sounds like its coming from the supercharger, but without the belt is there anything happening?
What you can do to help narrow down the issue is disconnect one ignition coil at a time, start the engine and see if the noise is still there or if it goes away. If the noise is still there, reconnect that ignition coil and disconnect the one next to it. Repeat this process on one cylinder at a time until you start it up and get no noise. If you get no noise from that one particular cylinder, that means there’s a problem with that piston and/or rod. If you still get a noise having disconnected all 8 ignition coils, then I would do a compression check and go from there. Maybe disconnect the main drive belt and see if that’ll quiet things down a bit?
Doesn't sound like a rod knock to me. A rod knock would noticeably change (go quieter) when the engine is loaded, like when the transmission is engaged. It sounds a bit "hollow" with some faint squeaks. I would first check if any of the pulleys is loose, including the crank pulley. As suggested, running the engine briefly without the accessories belt may tell something.
