1989 digital XJ40 dash needs a firm hit to work
Hi There!
I have an XJ40 (1989) with one of these mighty digital 32x32 px displays to inform me about the car. It looks so cool, but it doesn't work most of the time.
The good thing is that the MOT guys didn't notice the ABS was not working, though, but I'd like the display to work now.
When I hit the dashboard hard it sometimes starts to work for a few minutes. Also the odometer doesn't go beyond 100 kmh unless I hit the dashboard.
The buttons for choosing what to see on the display and cruise control work fine.
Does anyone know where to start looking for this issue? Obviously, take the instrument cluster out, but any other good hints before I start are really welcome.
Thank you!
Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
The problems with the early XJ40 digital instrument clusters are well known, and are usually traced to cold (dry) or starved solder joints on the circuit boards inside the cluster. See this thread and the information provided by our member Rob Evenson:

Your location is blank so I can't guess whether your car is LHD or RHD. Also, it's helpful if you add your car's year, model and engine to your signature line in case you forget to add that information to future posts. Use your User Control Panel - hover your mouse over your user name in the upper right of this page and click on User CP.
Below are links that show how to remove the driver's side knee bolster, steering column cowl and instrument cluster on our '93. Your car will be a little different, but the principles will be the same:

Thank's a lot Don! Those links help a lot. I am looking forward to take the dash apart and ask a friend who has soldering experience on computer mainboards to fix it for some beers in exchange
I also have a bulb failure warning but that seems to be more or less the same trick, just got to find the unit in the boot.
The last thing to fix would be the ABS itself but since I have some experience with the three Amigo's on the Land Rovers I'm not looking forward to it
I thought I typed in somewhere that it was a 1989 one but yes, I'll fill out my profile and introduce myself in the appropriate thread. It's a LHD one by the way, 3.2 litre straight 6.
