1993 XJ-6 replacement key
I was quoted $80.00 per key from the dealer. I found 2 blank keys on Amazon for $20.00 (they require cutting obviously). My question is - do 1993 models have any kind of electronic chip or some other security measure that would prevent me from simply making duplicate and using a new key to start the car?
No they don't and there is an excellent write up online about tibbe style keys and how they are coded. Should show up with a google. As i remember, there are three variations in the cut, no cut, shallow cut and deep cut.
You can also read the code on your original key from the online guide and see the differences in a valet version and a regular version, which I believe is in the style of the tip ...

Lawrence, thank you so much for the info. I found blanks on line for 10 dollars each. Going to check with local lock smiths and Ford dealer how much it would be to cut the keys once I get them.
I purchased a couple of blanks from ebay and while they were not Jaguar branded keys they were made in Italy.
I had a local locksmith cut a new key for mine and If I recall it was $15-$20. It was a premium over a standard bladed key but not unreasonable IMHO.

I spoke to local Jaguar dealer, they told me that they will cut keys for $30 if I bring them the blanks. Got 2 blanks on Amazon for 17 dollars, so I will let you all know how it goes.
Update on the key story:
Jaguar of Cincinnati made me 2 keys for $25 a piece from the blanks I provided. On an unexpected positive note, the new keys properly engage my ignition lock, so the car starts with a key, without using the starter override switch.
